Helping Protea bring Scope to market

We have worked with Aberdeen-based Protea Consultancy to develop the brand, website and commercial launch for Scope, a new contract risk analysis platform created for businesses across energy, engineering and construction.

Scope turns more than 30 years of Protea’s combined experience in procurement, contract management, commercial operations and supply chains into a repeatable digital assessment. It helps businesses identify contractual risks, obligations, gaps and potential commercial exposure before these issues affect cost, margins, delivery or supplier relationships.

The platform has been created primarily for organisations that regularly negotiate and manage complex agreements but may not have extensive legal, commercial or contract-management resources available internally.

Beth Towsey, Founder and Managing Director of Protea Consultancy, said:

“Many businesses face complex contractual terms and significant commercial obligations without having a large specialist team in house, which results in slow and lengthy reviews that need to be outsourced. Scope brings Protea’s contracting principles and practical commercial experience into a structured assessment, helping businesses identify the issues that matter and approach their contracts with greater clarity and confidence.”

How Scope works

Users begin by uploading a contract as a Word document or PDF. Scope identifies and masks specified confidential information, including party names, pricing and personal data, before the document is assessed.

The remaining contract content is reviewed against Protea’s fair contracting principles matrix, which has been developed specifically around the commercial realities of energy, engineering and construction contracts.

Scope identifies areas that warrant attention and presents its findings in a clear, structured format. Users can examine the results online and produce a detailed risk report alongside a concise qualifications table in Excel or PDF. These outputs can be shared internally, used during negotiations or included within a tender response.

The aim is to give businesses a clearer first view of what they are being asked to accept, where risk sits and which obligations could have wider commercial or operational consequences.

Andrew Towsey, Director of Procurement at Protea Consultancy and co-founder of Scope, said:

“The risk in a contract rarely stays on the page. An unclear obligation can become an unexpected cost, a delivery failure, pressure on margin or a dispute. Scope brings those issues into view while there is still time to question or negotiate.”

Confidentiality considered from the outset

Commercial agreements can contain sensitive pricing, intellectual property, technical information, customer and supplier details, liabilities and hard-won negotiating positions.

Scope has therefore been developed with confidentiality as a central consideration. Its redaction process separates specified confidential identifiers from the contract content before assessment, while purpose-built guardrails keep the review focused on Protea’s defined contracting principles.

This allows businesses to gain structured commercial insight without treating a sensitive contract as simply another document to be uploaded to a general-purpose platform.

Bringing the product to market

Our role has been to help Protea turn its specialist knowledge and a technically promising platform into a clear, distinctive and commercially credible product.

We worked with Beth and Andrew to define Scope’s market position, clarify its audiences and communicate its purpose in accessible commercial language. From there, we developed the Scope brand and visual identity, its core narrative and marketing messages, and the relationship between Scope and the established Protea Consultancy brand.

We also created the Scope website and shaped the customer journey, including the presentation of its features, confidentiality process, outputs and pricing. This was supported by launch materials, email and social campaigns, sales communications, media relations and the wider commercial-launch programme.

The result is a product identity and route to market that reflect both the specialist expertise behind Scope and the practical needs of the businesses it has been created to support.

A collaborative development process

Scope was created through a partnership between Protea and local software developers TrackGenesis.

Protea supplied the contracting principles, commercial framework and industry expertise that underpin the platform’s assessments. TrackGenesis led the technical development of the software, translating Protea’s methodology into a functioning digital product.

TMD then developed the positioning, brand, website and launch campaign required to introduce Scope to the market and explain its value to prospective users.

That combination of contracting expertise, technical development and commercial communication has enabled Protea to move beyond consultancy and turn the knowledge behind its advisory work into a scalable product.

Scope is now available

Scope can be used for an individual contract review, with one-off assessments starting from £300 plus VAT. Subscription plans are also available for organisations that review contracts regularly, including options for higher-volume and multi-user requirements.
